From my sewing machine! I've been working on a mystery quilt that was graciously offered by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville, an outstanding author, teacher, and quilter. I put that aside to work on the January Free Motion Quilting Challenge being held by Sew Cal Gal.

This is a year long challenge, each month a different FMQ (free motion quilting) expert will offer a tutorial with great tips and instructions for improving one's skills on quilting with your Home Sewing Machine.

The tutorial for January was given by Frances Moore and the theme was leaves.

Anywho, here is my first practice piece. The photo was taken with my iPhone, so it might not be as clear as it could be-

I tried the leaves and the leaves with the spirals - I still need a lot of practice!

The delicate blooms of the Kwanzan Cherry that is in our front yard.
We planted the tree 19 years ago, just a few days before our wedding.
So beautiful when it is in full bloom, and it always blooms near our anniversary.

The rain and high winds this weekend knocked a lot of the blooms off, so our front yard, sidewalks and porch are now covered with pale pink petals.

Saturday morning was so nice, the weather was lovely.

The Sun had not yet burned through the morning fog.

I ventured out to take some pictures of the trees and flowers in bloom.

Friday Night Sew In..confessions:)

Confessions of the Imperfect Piecer here....even though I had great plans for sewing Friday night, I felt too 'puny' to do much. I did get this layered and pin-basted, and even started the machine quilting on it. I want to make this into a quilted pillow case with buttons on the end. We keep a pillow that size on our sofa most of the time, and a quilted pillow case would be so much nicer than just a regular case. The back will just be muslin that I will quilt.

Anyway, please excuse the picture...its just some heart blocks sewn together, ( still needing the side borders sewn on in this pic). The blocks are from the GO! tutorial I had here earlier this week, I am anxious to try quilting feathers on the muslin back. I just love machine quilting!
Note: the muslin is Moda muslin...does that make it okay?!?

I'm beginning to feel a bit better, so I plan on sewing on Sunday.
Most of the time I'm raring to go with my sewing, but this weekend I just haven't felt up to doing 'power sewing'!

One of those days when I really should have just stayed in bed...I did go to the laundromat and wash the duvets and comforters. What a job! I am so glad all the linens are clean and either back on the beds or stored away now.

See what is popping out of the ground! The tulips never fail to surprise me each spring, no matter the weather, the little leaves push right out of the ground. It is a beautiful and warm day - 70! - but last week the temperature was in the 20's.

The little squirrel was so happy about the weather, he was a blur running up and down the trees and sidewalks!

I looked out today to see so many glorious Robins in the trees and running around on the ground! I counted well over 100 at one time! My pictures are pretty fuzzy, apparently Robins don't like close-up photos taken of them:)

Heart Block Tutorial using the Accuquilt GO! value die

a tutorial using the value or basic die that is included with your Accuquilt GO! fabric cutter

I am not usually able to piece precisely - either my seam allowance is off a bit or I've cut the square just a bit smaller or larger. I don't have to worry about cutting the shapes properly with my GO! and I think I finally have my 1/4" seam allowance set. (I've only had my 'new' sewing machine about 1 1/2 years:))

Today's tutorial is how to cut and sew a Heart block using the basic (value) die that came with the GO!

For reference this die cuts:

Square-4 1/2" (4" finished)
Square-2 1/2" (2" finished)
Half Square-2" finished triangle (cuts four)

Besides not being able to easily piece accurately, I'm also admitting I'm a dork. To play around with the shapes and see what blocks I could make with the basic die, I cut several sheets of white paper. No pink or blue or red added, just white copy paper. Duh! It did the job, though:)

This block will be 8" unfinished, 7 1/2" unfinished.

You will need
from main 'heart fabric'

8 (2 1/2") triangles
2 (2 1/2") squares
1 ( 4") square

from background fabric

8 (2 1/2") triangles
2 (2 1/2") squares

Note: I try to be thrifty when using my fabrics, so I cut about a 10" square of my main 'heart' fabric, then strips to cut the additional squares and triangles

I laid my pieces in rows, then picked up all the triangles and chain-stitched them to save both time and all those little thread ends from having to be clipped. This is a tip I learned from visiting Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville site - a wealth of knowledge and beautiful quilts!

After stitching the triangles, I pressed the seams open to avoid bulk , for all the other seams I pressed them flat then to one side.

In the picture above, you can see that I have stitched and pressed the triangle pairs, and stitched a 2 1/2" square to the top of a triangle pair. Make sure you have the triangle pairs with the square attached facing the heart!

This picture (above) shows the 3 sections across.
Two pair of triangles are sewn together for the top section
The triangle square units are sewn to each side of the 4" square for the center section
A 2 1/2" background square is sewn on each side of the remaining triangle pair unit.

Next, stitch the sections together. See how nicely the squares and triangle points fit together?

Here is a block I made using 4 of the Heart blocks, using an Aunt Grace fabric.
Next time I will show you the border I am making for this block using the same basic die-

I hope to make a block or two a week using the basic die. Stay tuned! I have 3 projects going at the same time, I didn't plan on that, but it seems I keep finding things I just have to make;)

Upon arriving home from husband having tests at the hospital, we see a huge box marked Perishable!
We found my new love inside:

My husband immediately picked the Lemon sorbetto to try, and he said it was absolutely delicious!

My youngest son ate the cup of mango. He said he wasn't a critic, but it was the best he had ever had. He said the flavor was perfect!

If your store has Roba Dolce (at Kroger, it is under the store brand) you will be doing yourself a favor by buying the best sorbetto and gelato available! It is just plain delicious:)

The Sun is Shining!

Today, the sun is shining and it is 49 degrees out! I'm excited to see the sun shine brightly enough to create the shadows:) I even felt like going out and taking a few pictures!

Little Mr. Squirrel was in a playful mood today, and acted as if he was posing for me as he scampered through the tree branches and about the yard -

Wow, I'm astonished by how much snow some of you received! I was griping about the 2 inches of snow we received earlier in the week, but I am not saying another word after seeing pictures of over 3 feet of snow in Connecticut.

My husband had an endoscopy Friday morning. He saw a different doctor this week who is (I hope) going to find out the cause of his intense stomach pain. The doctor said the endoscopy was clear, I'm so thankful. Next week he is scheduled to have an ultrasound of his gall bladder.

I should get at least two of the dog's heads cut out and sewn down this evening for my 'Let Sleeping Dogs Lie', and will post a pic as soon as I do!

I can't believe that January is almost gone, even with all the snow days, it has just flown by!

My Friday Sewing

I did have fun yesterday!
After my morning coffee, I finished quilting the blue tumbler quilt and added the binding - I even got about half of the binding sewn down!
The blue tumbler is another throw-size quilt (just right to snuggle under while laying on the couch) that I cut out with my Accuquilt GO! These go together so quickly, it only takes a few hours to cut and piece a throw-sized top.
It is just random scraps from my blue fabric scrap box..no rhyme or reason to the layout.

I am practicing my machine quilting - again - and used nearly 800 yards of thread playing and scribbling on this one. It should be nice and 'puckery' after its washed.

The backing and binding fabric is much richer in color "in person" and it came from the $2.50 shelf at my LQS! (local quilt shop) What a bargain!!...I always shop that shelf first, the fabrics are first quality, but have been in the store for a while.

Next, I cut out and pieced 2 blocks for my "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie" quilt. The blocks took a while to cut out, and even longer to piece. It is a basic Snail's Trail block with a little adjustment for the dog's head placement.
I think these blocks will have a Schnauzer, a Lab, a Boxer and a Boston Terrier appliqued in the corners.

The blocks are 16 1/2" unfinished.

It was a fun day of sewing! Now on to make more blocks and finish sewing that binding down.

I hope I don't have to go out much today, it is only 10 degrees, even though it is bright and sunny!

I do have to run to the LQS for a little more fabric - I like the greys used in these blocks, they have a nice contrast.

This-n-that and Friday Night Sew In

At 6 pm this evening, it began to snow. It's now 9 pm and there is 2 inches of snow on the ground with 6 inches expected before midnight. Arghhh!! It has been so dreary, even though it was a little warmer earlier this week, I guess it has given me a case of the blues:) To chase them away, I've been practicing my free motion quilting. I still have a long way to go to consider myself 'practiced', but I'm finally getting the hang of maneuvering the quilt and keeping my stitches the same length.

Thursday was my little dogs, Cletus and Earl, fifth birthday! They are so cute, I hope to have pictures of them when or if the sun ever comes out again:)

I have my pattern and my fabric for the Friday Night Sew In.

I'm hoping this quilt turns out as cute as the picture...it is hard to see in the picture, but there are sixteen different dogs curled up together. The pattern is "Let Sleeping Dogs Lie", and I think I will make extra blocks to make the quilt bed-sized. I just don't know what to do with odd sized quilts:)

.I will take pictures as I construct the quilt, I hope to get most of the blocks cut out and assembled Friday Night! I've got my tea and chocolate ready. I think I will bake chocolate chip cookies, too:)

Unruly Quilters

I joined a group blog that is led by Tonya Ricucci, author of 'Word Play Quilts'. It is both fun and challenging, her goal is to make a group quilt consisting of the words "Bah! Humbug!".
I'm new to this liberated way of assembling wonky letters, and am learning so much from the other more accomplished letter makers in the group!

I do love to learn new ways and techniques, and will keep practicing till I learn more about this wonderful way of making words. I have a word quilt in mind, and can't wait to start on it.

Forgive the poor quality picture..the colors are much richer and brighter than shown, but even with an Ott lamp shining on the letters, it still came out wonky.

I know it has been quite a while since I've posted anything, but I wanted to wish each and every one Happy Holidays!

We celebrate Christmas in a quiet way, very little shopping, lots of cooking and eating, and lots more time to spend with family (since we quit frantically shopping and trying to please everyone:))

I've finished 4 quilts in the last month, and have two poor quality pictures. The star was made as a Christmas present for my father-in-law, who is already sleeping under this heavy quilt! It has a heavy cotton backing with a warm n' natural batting, so it will keep him warm this winter.

The Tumbler throw quilt is one I made for myself. Selfish, I know:)
I cut the pieces out with the tumbler die on my Accuquilt GO! which makes the piecing a dream.
The shapes fit perfectly together, and quilting this took the longest. I meandered in lazy shapes, and it has a nice texture after washing. I made my mother a similar quilt from pink floral fabric and green and white floral with butterflies as a Christmas present. I hope she likes hers as much as I do mine!

Hoping everyone has an enjoyable weekend! I've missed blogging, and hope to be back on schedule soon.

Friday Night Sew In

Sorry to have been 'missing' for so long - we have had Bronchitis (this deserves a capital letter) and I've just been worn out at the end of each day. Other odd and various things have also gone on, such as our car and oven quitting, costly repairs but both were repaired by my youngest son!

I used the tumbler die with the Accuquilt GO! and cut enough tumbler pieces to make a sofa quilt.
Since its getting colder and the evenings are longer, we need a TV snuggle quilt:)
I didn't buy 'new' fabric, just dug into my stash for enough yardage for a two color quilt.

This is the first die I've used other than cutting squares, and I'm very impressed with the ease of cutting perfect pieces. I did outline the 'die' with a purple marker for ease of lining up the fabric. Makes the pictures easier to see, too:)

Off to get busy, hopefully back with a progress report this evening!

Well, I am laughing at myself right now! I took quite a few pictures, but didn't have the memory card in my camera. Duh!
I did get a sofa cushion slipcovered, only 9 more to go. The first one is always the hardest, so I hope to get them finished in the next couple of days. A very old sofa that is still very sturdy, just needs some updating.
Pictures soon, if I can remember to put the memory card back in the camera:)
Raining here, snow flurries expected tomorrow night. I'm never ready for cold weather, its just too early for even a hint of snow!

Will leave you with a picture of Victoria, who is growing by leaps and bounds! We affectionately call her Hell Cat now, as our two older cats let her get by with everything. She is everywhere at one time, then all of a sudden, she is asleep and looks so sweet. She is now 9 weeks old! A kitten by any other name-

The Pumpkin House

What a crowd! We parked and walked two blocks to the Pumpkin House this evening. Not knowing that there was a line that extended forever the other way, we walked right into the yard and looked and looked at the pumpkins.
We were able to see the Headless Horseman ride his horse down the street. Fun!
The Music Wall is spectacular, each pumpkin with an instrument carved into it lights up as that instrument is played in the symphony.
The Cat Choir was in its best voice, and the animal pumpkins were aboard Noah's Ark. A special section was reserved for the birds. Just amazing!
It was so crowded, it was hard to see anything very well. I would estimate there were at least 2000 people either looking or waiting in line. 30,000 people are estimated to view the Pumpkin House this weekend.
That is a huge crowd for this area!

Trick-or-Treat!

I'm exhausted.
We worked all morning to finish the final decorations, then make-up for our cast of Zombies, and Trick-or-Treat started at 5 pm. Over 1000 children came to our house to be both scared a little and be treated to candy.
I'm exhausted. oops, I've already said that!
We then walked to the City Street Party for a few minutes of festivities including free food, fantastic door prizes and meeting friends and family. All in all, a fun day!

Halloween Decorations

My husband's best pal , Aaron, came over today and started decorating our tiny house for Trick-or-Treat! He built most of the props, even the coffin has a lid that moves up and down. He and my sons enveloped our porch with black plastic, making our house look even smaller and very spooky at night

All of this for 2 hours of Trick-or-Treat! It is worth all of the work , we do get a big kick out of watching the children's faces when they see everything. We generally have from 500 to 700 children walk by!

Lights, fog, smoke machines, creepy music and moving figures will complete all of this later - and, we are all going to dress or do what ever people do to look like Zombies? No rain or high winds, please:)

Pumpkin Tuesday~

It started raining here during the night and rained all day. No pumpkin carving for me - it was a cold rain!
I did get a few pictures of the Pumpkin House this evening, but they aren't so good...
There were a lot of people braving the rain, diligently working on the pumpkins! Still thousands to go-

News around town - the bowling alley caught fire in the early hours, quite a bit of damage, but the owners have already had contractors in to assess the damage.

In preparation for the Autumn Fest Parade tomorrow night, MacDonald's has put a HUGE inflated pumpkin on their roof. The parade goes by at the end of my street, my family is in the parade, so I'll be watching and taking pictures. Of course, rain is expected.

They were working on the Symphony of Pumpkins today - hopefully I can figure out how to get a video of it on here! He has these very tall cases lined with shelves, and each shelf holds pumpkins carved like a musical instrument . As each musical section plays, the different sections of pumpkins light up to the music. Genius, pure genius!
A new addition this year is the Women's Choir - can't wait to see it.

Tomorrow begins the Great Pumpkin Carving at the Griffith's Victorian House

.First, volunteers will scoop out the 'guts' of over 3000 pumpkins.

Hoping I feel well enough to help for a few hours. The weather is perfect -cool and crisp

There may even be frost on the pumpkins!

Our friend, who lives on a secluded country lane, always decorates our front yard for Halloween. Today, he brought 4 large coffins he built and 2 huge containers of other spooky stuff.

Monday, we will work all day to transform the yard, which will include fog machines, spooky music and various creepy characters. Last year, over 700 children came to our house for candy!

We are all dressing up as Zombies, which should be interesting, since I'm not sure what one looks like:)

Saffron Crocus

Lovely Saffron Crocus growing in my neighbor's yard.

I noticed these during my short walk today, so dainty and looking so out of place at this time of year!

See the three red styles? Those are collected and dried for the Saffron spice. I guess the gathering of those tiny styles is what makes Saffron the most expensive spice (by weight) in the world.

This crocus only blooms in the fall, making for a bright spot amid the grass and falling leaves.

Just another totally useless factoid - can hardly remember my address, but have a vast library of this kind of crap tucked away in my head:)

If anyone needs Hosta seeds, please let me know!

The Hostas are large leafed, flower in early Summer with purple flowers, and grow fairly quickly from seed.

One more Town of Ceredo Fall Display - this one is put together by the city workers, and their creativity is obvious. ~~A bit Strange?~~ a touch unusual, but one can tell that quite a bit of thought went into this display.

I still don't know who "Crazzy" Tom was or is - but at least he's not smoking a cigarette as he did last year. I guess people's sense of humor doesn't stretch that far here, because the cigarette was removed shortly after the display was set up:)

Removal of Pumpkin 'guts' from the 4000 pumpkins starts Saturday. I'll be there with my spoon:))

Easy Peach Cobbler

The easiest Peach Cobbler Recipe ever!
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
As the oven is heating, put a stick of butter or margarine in a 3 quart casserole dish or a 9" x 13" baking pan and let it melt as the oven heats.

In a bowl, mix 1 cup of self-rising flour with 1 cup of sugar, mix lightly and add 1 cup of milk.
Open a 29 oz. can of sliced peaches, drain the juice

When the butter or margarine melts, pour the batter over the butter.
Add the peach slices, spreading them evenly over the top of the batter.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (keep checking after 30 minutes, you want a brown crust to form around the edges)
The dough magically rises up through the peaches and makes a pretty good cobbler!

Ingredients:

1 stick butter or margarine
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup milk
1 (29 ounce) can of sliced peaches, drained
350 degree oven
3 quart casserole dish or 9" x 13" baking pan

Enjoy!

I also need to recover couch cushions this week, my fabric has been washed and is ready for cutting!

This fun bear is all dressed up for Halloween!

He is the mascot for Griffith & Feil Drug and Soda Fountain

The Soda Fountain is authentic, featuring tin ceilings, wooden floors and 'real' sodas- including Coca Colas made the old fashioned way with syrup and carbonated water. Yum!

A wooden telephone booth is a handy coat closet.

The walls are decorated with old pictures of how our towns once looked.

A fun place to enjoy a meal and a soda!

The leaves are beginning to turn colors quickly now, and the ground is littered with the glowing colors of the fallen leaves!
Surely my neighbors are used to seeing me peering at the ground, while I look for interesting leaves...if not, they do know I march to my own drummer:)

Pumpkin carving starts October 23 at the Griffith Pumpkin House. Trying to be patient and get all of my fall housecleaning finished before then.

My mother fell well enough to enjoy the warm day by sitting on our porch all afternoon.

The dogs were walked, the cats were fed.

Can you get a peek of what is in these boxes? Pumpkins! At the Pumpkin House!
As we were driving by, we saw a big truck loaded with the boxes. I told my hubby to hurry so I could get a good picture. We pulled as close as possible and saw that many other loads of pumpkins had already been unloaded and were waiting to be carved for Halloween!

I can't wait to go and help clean pumpkins and take lots of pictures:)

Indian Corn explained

Thanks to Google, the Philiadelphia Examiner and Wikipedia I found out what makes Indian Corn different than the sweet corn we normally eat . Indian corn is a type of corn that stores well and can be ground for corn flour or corn meal.

Indian corn is flint corn, also known as maize, zea mays or calico corn.. It is a hard starch corn. If you eat it, it won’t hurt you; but it doesn’t have much taste, although new edible strains are being developed every year.

Indian corn comes in many different colors. Native American growers have produced multi-colored, magenta, red, scarlet, pink, yellow, orange, bright blue, dark blue, light blue, black, purple, maroon, brown, white, and even cream colored maize. Over the years, growers continued to cross-breed corn that produces new colors. Corn kernels have different colors because their individual genes. Each kernel on the cob is a separate entity with their own genes, yet they form on the same cob; just like brothers and sisters in the same home, each is different, but they live together. The colors actually attract and repel pests. There are exotic maize varieties, as well as, variegated maize. Although today, we use Indian corn for fall decorating, some people buy the corn to use as popcorn, and to grind up as flour. If you buy the blue Indian corn, you can also grind it up and make blue corn flour tortillas.

Berkley is home!

Berkley came home from the hospital today with two small stitches in his neck area. His surgery was more successful than even the surgeon had hoped for - instead of a 50% improvement, it is an estimated 65% improvement!

He is such a sweet little boy, I'm so glad he will live a healthy life now.

He has to 'take it easy' and have special medicines for a couple of weeks, after that...watch out!

On the Corner

Our little town's Autumn decorations - on most corners foddershocks decorated with Indian corn and a scarecrow were placed on the light post. Some corners even get a couple of bales of straw thrown in for good measure. A huge pot of yellow chrysanthemums is next to it. Very festive!

The town is getting ready for the ~~hordes~~ large crowds of people who drive through our town to get to the Pumpkin House. The Pumpkin House is in the next town, and will be decorated with over 4000 carved and lighted pumpkins. I love to go by the house often (at least once a day from now until November 1) so I will be blogging about the pumpkins ad nauseum or until someone shouts STOP!

On a fabric-related note, I was sorting out fabric that was at least 18 years old, carefully deciding which pieces I just had to keep. Eventually, I decided to chuck it all. Oh, no..not throw it away, but give it away (except for the piles of 2" squares that I had carefully cut at one time, thinking I had the patience to sew them together. I still don't have that patience, so I did toss them.)
Trying to lighten my load, footprint, whatever one chooses to call it. Mostly, cutting down the amount of flotsam one can collect over 20 years in one house! I already feel better mentally about ridding myself of unused and unwanted stuff. Now to stay in this frame of mind and 'Be Calm and Carry On!' with my Fall list of chores to do.

A few tense hours today, Berkley the puppy was scheduled to have his surgery today. The foster parents were expecting to hear from the hospital at noon, and at 2:00 pm still hadn't had a call. Finally, they got the call that Berkley was doing well, but the surgeons had a problem threading the catheter through to the heart - it broke! It was removed and the surgery was completed successfully, thank goodness! He comes home tomorrow, and we can't wait to see him:)

Victoria and Berkley

The pink morning glories grow on one side of the alley, the blue ones on the other! I don't understand why, so I just stop to appreciate their beauty each day.

Victoria the kitten has her own little personality - she is very vocal and very active at only 5 weeks old!
The Princess has decided to mother the kitten and washes her constantly, doesn't want us touching her and lets her eat all she can hold about 5 times a day. Kittens are time-consuming, but well worth it!

I made a quilt for a puppy today. A very special puppy who must have heart surgery on Wednesday. Our friends are foster parents for the little puppy, and have raised, thru the no-kill animal shelter, enough money to have the surgery done. Please keep Berkley in your thoughts as he goes through this life-saving procedure.

Tropical Hibiscus

One of those days..a little of this, a little of that, plus I 'm working on a crate mat for a very special puppy who is scheduled to have heart surgery on Tuesday at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. He is one of our friend's foster dogs, but I think he has found his forever home:) I'm hoping he has a very successful surgery!

Betty's First Quilt!

Today I sewed one side of the binding on and, my mother-in-law, Betty (Mrs. Kitts) is busy handsewing the other side of the binding down. This quilt was 4 1/2" unfinished squares so she could practice sewing 1/4" seams and joining the rows together. For someone who hadn't even used a sewing machine until a few weeks ago, I think she did a fantastic job! She is already planning her next quilt! Better pictures tomorrow, we didn't want to take it outside and get it dirty:)

Victoria came to live with us today, my elder cats are closely inspecting her crate. I won't pet the kitten with them around until they become more adjusted to her. She is laying on a huge stuffed animal in her crate, sound asleep. My husband is doing all the holding and petting...she is a little character!

My Sky Friday & The Quilt

My Sky
We have finished machine quilting! Mostly 'stitching in the ditch' following the patchwork in a grid pattern.
That is the largest quilt I've ever machine quilted, but we didn't make too* many mistakes, and are pretty pleased with it overall. We took turns at shoving that big old quilt thru the machine, and it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would.
The binding is cut and sewn together, so I'll sew it on today and we will get started on the handwork.
Hope there is a good movie on today!

Morning, Glory

The morning glories are still blooming! The vines and leaves are beginning to look a little ragged, but the blooms continue.
Another busy day for my limited amount of stamina - we finished pinning the quilt in order to start the quilting.
We were able to quilt 1/4 of the quilt today, it is one of the biggest I've ever attempted to quilt on my home machine. The new machines that have the big areas between the body of the machine and the needle are very tempting (especially the new Horizon by Janome:)) It would make it so much easier to do free motion quilting!
Enough dreaming, time for bed - a long day of machine quilting tomorrow!
I also have to get ready for the new kitten, she will live in our master bath until she is a little larger and my older cats have time to adjust to a 'youngin' in the house!

Meet little Victoria Kitten!

Look at this tiny little kitten! She is estimated to be about 4 weeks old, and was found in a ditch, and taken to a local kennel, Wigglebutt Farms. She is so tiny, the owner thought it might need to be bottle-fed, and funny thing, I talked to her at the local pharmacy last night. She offered me the kitten, and I regretfully declined (at that time!).
Our friends had left their boxer at the kennel for an overnight stay (they went to see Lady GaGa!-another story at another time.) Anyway, they ended up taking the kitten home with them to foster until a forever family could be found. He let us know about the kitten, and then brought it by today.

Guess who the kitten will be living with?

Victoria has had a big day today, going to the vet and then coming to visit me. She is the sweetest little kitten, and is very active to be so small. My friends named her. Her name is larger than she is, but it won't be long until she grows into it. We will bring her into our home on Friday, our friends are keeping her until she is flea-free, isn't that super nice of them?

Change of Plans!

Change of plans! My mother-in-law has finished piecing her queen-sized patch quilt and is ready for me to help her pin the backing, batting and top together and quilt it.
We cut the 4 1/2" squares using the Accuquilt GO! and she enjoyed cutting and sewing the pieces.
She pieced them together in no-time-flat:)
So, it will be a few days before I can cut out the tumbler pieces for a small throw quilt. Hopefully it will look like the one in this picture:

Accuquilt GO! dies received

In the box with the Accuquilt GO!, these three dies and corresponding cutting mats were included!

Tomorrow, I'm going to cut out enough tumbler patches to make a throw quilt.

I'm just going to go through my totes of 'older' fabrics and mix up the patches!

I also received the beginner die set with the GO!, and have already cut over 1000 4 1/2" squares for my mother-in-law. My whole family took a turn at cranking the handle, they all enjoyed 'helping'.

There was a bit of a learning curve, only in remembering to align the grain with the edge of the patch, since the material and die move through the accuquilt cutter much easier at a slight angle.

The dies shown are the 2 1/2" strip, the tumbler, and the critter (dragonfly, bee, and butterfly) appliques.

I think I will add a few 'critter' appliques randomly on the tumbler blocks, mainly so I can try out the applique die:), what do you think?

Bald Cypress in the Neighborhood

The cones of the 100 ft. tall Bald Cypress growing across the street.

The tree is a deciduous conifer, so it loses its needles during the winter.

I've never noticed cones on this tree before, they look like bunches of grapes hanging, and the tree is loaded with them this year. The squirrels will be fat this winter!

These trees are usually found in the Southeastern states and mostly grow in swamps...the trees with 'knees'.

I don't know how this one came to be growing here, but it is a very regal tree to have in the neighborhood.

Ceredo has its annual town reunion tomorrow and will have lots of good music, lots of people, and lots of good food ! We generally go and listen to the music for an hour or two, and see people we haven't seen for a while. Its fun!

I'm writing a little post today for the love of dogs. Write a post, help a dog!

Did you know that each year, more than 4 million dogs end up in shelters and breed rescue organizations? In response, PEDIGREE® created The PEDIGREE® Adoption Drive to help shine a spotlight on the plight of these homeless dogs.

The Rose of Sharon plants are blooming like crazy!

Today was busy, I helped my dear mother-in-law make a simple twin-sized quilt top.

It is a pretty floral fabric that we simply bordered with a contrasting fabric.

She learned how to use a rotary cutter to cut the border strips.

Tomorrow, we will pin the layers together and quilt it, then start the binding.

I'm so proud of her, she is doing so well with her sewing!

We used the Accuquilt GO! to cut enough 4 1/2" squares to make a queen-sized quilt top, and she has over half of them sewn together now.

The smell of Fall is in the air, and I'm ready to start sewing again! Yeah!

Maggie and Marshall University

I graduated from Marshall, so naturally I was rooting for the football team to win its game against WVU.

Maggie, the dog, was forced to wear a WVU jersey.

My oldest son bought the jersey and made poor Maggie wear it every day this week.

Well, I'm sorry to say, HER team won.

Computer Issues!

Just an update- have had my wonderful computer in the 'shop', it had a virus! Now it has a NEW keyboard (yeah!), a new fan and various other bits and pieces. As soon as I get everything re-installed, I'll be back to my blog.

More about the GO! fabric cutter tomorrow- my dear mother-in-law bought a sewing machine today. She is learning so fast and is already sewing!

We used the GO! to cut out squares for her to sew together. It is so accurate, its amazing!

I so enjoyed spending time with her and teaching her the basics of her machine and sewing seams.

Thanks to Jacqueline Kunkel and Accuquilt the Accuquilt GO! arrived today! Wow, that was fast!

I am so excited, but I did take pictures of how great the packaging was and of all the goodies that were in the box!

It arrived in a huge box that was quite heavy!

When the box was opened, these air filled bags popped out, just like a jack-in-the-box:)

So many, the branches are nearly on the ground.

All I can say is the squirrels better be watching these ripen as closely as I will watch them.
